Gig Notes to Jazz Colony Students for Romeo’s –

Place:  Romeo’s Edmonds.

Date:  Tuesday, 7-31-2012

Musicians: -- Set up --

1.  Gear people be there at 6:00…. (drums, keyboard and bass)

2.  Entire Jazz Colony be there by 6:30 to finish set up.

3.  We will congregate outside doors at the North East corner of the building at from

6:00 – 6:30.   When you are not playing on the songs, hang out in the space as is available, but we will use this outside space to store our gear and our equipment... and even to hang out when we would otherwise be taking space of for patrons to might want to use the space and tables to buy dinner.....  Certainly, if you are eating dinner with your folks or friends, you can be at any tables....

4.  Bring:

a.  Music.  (for the music on the Set lists….  Try to dig it up?  Call Pete if necessary to get some???

            b.  Music Stand.  (we will need a few…)

            c.  folding chair (to use to sit outside with group to eat some pizza….?  I will

                        throw a few pizzas on the a card table outside in our congregation area… 

            d.  Music instrument.

            e.  Peter Bennett will bring the Keyboards and Drums over by 6:00….

            f.  Pete will bring TIP JAR for Jazz Colony gig….

g.  Pete will bring small PA amp with Mic for telling audience what is going on…. Introduce, etc… songs, kids, etc… thank you, etc..

            h.  Help set up.

            i.  at 10:00 help tear down.

5. Study the Tentative Set list below… and the songs you are on….  Practice those before Tuesday…..      – Leader of the Band, Jack Roben can change around the set list, the order, etc….  or who plays on what song, or just play a house host band song with no guests, etc….

6.  Have fun at  the Gig – listen to everyone else and learn about gigs….

July 18th Recap

Last week we worked on rhythm--having good rhythm/time/groove/swing is the most important element of improvising jazz! We worked on improvising with the riff rhythms from the packet. You can practice this on your own by choosing a single rhythm of the sheet and repeating it over and over--you can play any notes you want, but sick to the rhythm. This will help you have a develop time-feel help you incorporate repetition into your solos. Practice the riff rhythms along with these drum groove tracks from my book. We also learned "One for Daddy-O" by Nat Adderley by ear. Check out this famous recording by Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis. Cannonball plays a face-melting solo! Miles's solo is a good one to transcribe.

Here is a link to a recording of "The Preacher" for you to download. For extra credit, learn the harmony part. Make sure you have learned both of these songs by ear by next week.

Our next session is Wednesday 7/25. We will focus on learning a couple more tunes by ear, and strategies for improvising on them for our upcoming performances. This is the last session before the Romeo's Pizza gig on the 31st.

Due to faculty scheduling conflicts Jazz Colony next Tuesday is cancelled. We will instead meet on Thursday July 12 at 6:00PM. Sorry for the inconvenience. 

A couple more things: 

Remember to come up with a personal short three to five note melody that will be your musical calling-card for the summer. We will use these melodies for ear-training, attendance, and musical games.

if you missed the first session, make sure you take a quick theory/ear-training assessment with Mr. Sisko.

First 2012 Session

We had a great first jazz colony session last night! After each session, we will post a recap of what we covered and additional material and recordings. Make sure to check this blog every week--especially if you missed the session and need to catch up. Big thanks to "the man on the street" Pete Bennett for being the driving force behind this workshop.

We will be performing this song at an upcoming performance, so make sure you know it! Resist the urge to look at a chart--learn this one entirely by ear. Extra credit for anyone who learns the harmony part and the backgrounds.

Everyone in the class received a packet of Jazz Colony info and materials. Make sure you bring your packet, a pencil, and a notebook/manuscript paper to every session.

Remember, the next Jazz Colony is next Tuesday July 10th.
